Guardianes del Golfo is a documentary miniseries, impact campaign and community-centered storytelling initiative highlighting Mexican coastal and Indigenous communities threatened by the proposed Saguaro LNG Project—a large-scale fossil fuel expansion that would export liquefied natural gas (LNG) through the Gulf of California, one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on Earth. 

Guardianes also serves as a central part of the first lawsuit in Mexico to argue for whales as legal subjects and for the recognition of nature’s intrinsic rights. This legal strategy is led by Nuestro Futuro A.C., the first youth-led climate litigation organization in the country. 

To garner public interest and support in the case, Expresión Colectiva por la Naturaleza (ECO; the production and mobilization arm of Nuestro Futuro) launched a national impact campaign encouraging Mexicans to become Guardianes del Golfo (Guardians of the Gulf) through signature-gathering campaigns, the creation of art, and participation in events that center joy and action. 

We weave the documentary miniseries into each element of the impact campaign, allowing the voices of frontline communities to inspire action. All of the materials produced from these activities are consequently submitted to the courts as evidence for why the Gulf of California and the whales should be protected. Each Guardian of the Gulf added to the campaign becomes another voice for the whales in court. 

Another key pillar of this project was the immersive exhibition at the Centro De Cultura Digital in Mexico City. It showcased the work we created over the past year at ECO, the work of our collaborators, the ECO Artistas, young Mexican artists chosen to represent the litigation through artwork, and each of the documentaries made.
